10 Minimalist Christmas Gift Ideas
Don’t get overwhelmed this holiday season.
Are you dreading the holiday season because of all the Christmas gifts that will clutter up your house? Gifts that your kids might play with one time and then lose interest shortly after.
Friend, I’m right there with you! That’s why this year I am becoming more mindful of my purchases, learning set boundaries and saying “no, thank you,” and giving gifts that aren’t wasteful.
This time of the year can be difficult for moms who are trying to live more minimally so, in this blog and podcast episode, I’m sharing with you ten minimalist Christmas gift ideas that aren’t wasteful.
#1 – Pajamas
My kids don’t have a lot of pajamas and they usually wear athletic wear or just their underclothes to sleep in. Giving them a new pajama set for Christmas is extra exciting for them because it’s not something they already have or at least not a lot of. If they got some pajamas the year before it’s likely they’ve outgrown them so getting a new set isn’t wasteful but actually useful instead. If your kids are like mine, they’ll wear that one set all year long.
#2 – Art Set
Art supplies tend to dry out, break or lose their useability and I always want to make sure I have just enough on hand for my kids to be creative. That’s why art supply sets are always a great idea for Christmas or any time of the year presents. I’m not a big fan of loose paper, so I try to provide my kids with a drawing book or art portfolio.
If your kids are having a hard time getting started with drawing and coloring, I recommend Art for Kids Hub on YouTube. My kids have become amazing little artists with their videos and I love that they are safe for them to watch. Give them a follow and watch your kids become talented artists.
My nine-year-old received this two years ago from a friend and we love it. It keeps all his art supplies organized and in one spot. Just add paper or a drawing tablet and your kids will be set for a year of creativity.
#3 – Trampoline
This might not be a great fit for every family but our family LOVES having a trampoline. We were gifted one from someone in our church several years ago and we have gotten good use of it. We love it so much that it is finally wearing out and we need to replace it. We’re going to make sure we get a big enough one of at least 15 feet and that it’s of good quality because we want it to last for years to come.
#4 – Membership to a Trampoline Park
My kids love jumping on trampolines so much that they are always asking to go to a trampoline park for the day. However, day tickets can get quite expensive. Some trampoline parks have started offering memberships that you can pay monthly at a more affordable rate. It actually ends up being cheaper than a signal day trip. If your kids are super active or if you want them to be more active, this would be a great gift to encourage their activity. Don’t forget to sign yourself up too so you can join in on the fun! It’s a great way to lose weight as well. It’s a win-win for everyone.
#5 – Replace Gear for Favorite Hobbies
Does your child have a favorite hobby? I’m sure his gear wears out, he outgrows it or there is something new to add to his collection. Adding to or replacing something your children are already interested in is a great idea for Christmas presents. You know that it won’t be wasteful because it’s something they already enjoy doing.
My daughter is a horse rider so a lot of the items on her wish list are for her horse riding hobby. This year she’s asked for a saddle sack so that she can carry her phone, snack, and other items on her rides. She’s had some time to figure out what she really needs or wants to make her hobby even more enjoyable so this request for a saddle sack won’t be wasted.
#6 – Family Indoor Games
Board games have always been my favorite gift as a child. Before the age of streaming television and social gaming, board games is has most of us would spend our time together. It’s my goal not to let this become a dying pass-time so we still play lots of board games in our house.
Some of our newest favorites are Ticket to Ride, Catan, and Splendor. We also like to play “BS” and Uno as we eat dinner. We share so many laughs and find that it’s a great opportunity to play with our kids. Board games can truly help you connect more with your children.
#7 – Family Outdoor Games
Our family LOVES to be outside. We enjoy biking, horse riding, throwing the football and baseball, and gardening (more so me than anyone else). Last year, we purchased a badminton set and played every day in the summer until a storm destroyed the net. This year someone gave us a croquet set and it’s been fun learning how to play the right way. I’m sure your family will love the excuse to get outside more and enjoy playing these old-school games as well.
#8 – Portable Bluetooth Speaker
My teenage daughter loved getting her portable Bluetooth speaker last year for Christmas. She plays music while in the shower, riding her horse, and doing schoolwork at home. For any teenager or music-lover, I’m sure she will love having a portable speaker.
Tech tip: Make sure you purchase one that is waterproof. We enjoyed taking her’s to the beach with us.
#9 – Camera
Kids love taking pictures. I bet your children are always wanting to look at pictures on your phone or take their own pictures. Photography was my favorite hobby when I was a kid as well. I had a camera with real film and I had to wait a week to get the pictures back after dropping them by the drug store to develop. Photography transcends all fads and generations so it never goes out of style.
I gave my daughter an Instax camera a couple of years ago and she’s loved it ever since. Last year she accidentally dropped it and broke it so this year I plan on getting her a replacement because she used her first one so much.
Cameras are great for kids at any age and there is a variety out there to choose from based on your child’s age.
#10 – Replace Anything Broken or Worn Out
This is probably my go-to for any Christmas present – replacing anything that is broken or worn out. My husband recently tore his Garmin watch band and asked to have it replaced which will be a super easy Christmas gift idea for him. Like I said earlier, I plan to replace my 14-year-old’s Instax camera that broke last year. My 9-year-old son needs a replacement charger for his hoverboard. I’m personally asking for new screen doors on the farmhouse.
You can find a lot of Christmas gift ideas just in the things that need to be fixed or replaced in your home currently. Give it some thought and I’m sure you’ll be able to create a Christmas gift list.
