Minimalist Farmhouse Thrifting
Do you love a good thrifting haul?
Last week, some friends and I got together for a moms’ day out thrifting. We’re all minimalists but we all love going to thrift stores.
One of the best things about thrifting is that I still get the thrill of hunting for items for my home without feeling guilty for spending too much money. Sometimes when we spend too much money on things we bring into our homes, we hang onto them longer than we really should just because of how much money we’ve spent.

You can be a minimalist and still enjoy shopping
If you want to become a minimalist but you still love to hunt for treasured items, then you will love thrifting. It’s so much fun! Grab some friends, map out a couple of stores, and plan a moms’ day out thrifting.
Thrift Store #1
Kitchen Aid Mixer
At the first thrift store we visited, I found this Kitchen Aid sitting on the checkout counter. The price at $150 was a little more than I wanted to spend so I asked the clerk if the store accepted negotiations. Unfortunately, the store doesn’t negotiate prices until an item has sat on the shelf for at least seven days. The Kitchen Aid was just put out on the shelf the day before.
I decided to give myself some time to think over my purchase. I had been thinking about getting a Kitchen Aid lately but I hadn’t gotten to the point that it was high on my wish list. So we left the store and I kept thinking about the mixer. I looked up what they’re being sold for on Facebook Marketplace and the price was fair.
I decided to go back and get it mainly for three reasons:
- I had already been thinking about purchasing a Kitchen Aid because I had a clear purpose and plan for its use.
- I had the extra money and I knew I wouldn’t feel guilty purchasing the mixer. I’ve learned to invest money in better quality items.
- I knew exactly where I was going to store it in a place that made it easy to use regularly.
Thrift Store #2
Vintage Cookie Jar
This cookie jar is my favorite find of the day! It makes me so happy. The items you purchase should do that – bring joy to your life.
This cookie jar makes me think of my dad because he worked at the US Postal Service. Maybe because it’s red, white and blue.
I snagged it for only $3.00. And yes, it will be filled with cookies on weekly and sweet memories will be made of my kids grabbing cookies from the cookie jar in mom’s farmhouse kitchen. Ahhh… living my dream life!
Metal Card Catalog Cabinet
I am a sucker for anything metal and I love anything that helps me to be more organized.
I saw this drawer cabinet for only $5.00, and I knew exactly what I wanted to use it for. My boys’ socks!!! If you have farm kids, then you know what I mean when I say it’s a constant struggle for my boy to keep up with their sock. I may have to start an incentive to train them.
Some ideas for this card catalog cabinet:
- Kids’ sock drawer
- Tool cabinet in shed
- Recipe or spice packet organizer (Not for me but may be a good idea for something else.)
Stainless Steel Frying Pan
A couple of years ago I invested in a cooking ware set from Pampered Chef. I’ve loved it but ten years later and the Teflon coating has a lot of wear.
I already have several cast iron pans but I’ve been wanting to start weeding out the Teflon pieces and switch to stainless steel cookware.
I found this stainless steel frying pan for only $3.00, and I love that it has a lid to go with it. I’m also not going to worry about having all matching pieces. I want to focus on what I need and will use in the kitchen and not be bound to a cooking set.
Thrift Store #3
Bread Basket
I’ve recently got back into the habit of making sourdough bread. The only thing I have for it to rise in though is a deep glass bowl. The bowl doesn’t make for pretty bread shapes when you flip it out to cook so I’ve been dreaming of a perfectly round and shallow bread basket.
Today I found it for only $0.50. I plan on lining it with a dishcloth when I set out bread to rise. Slowly but surely getting all the breast supplies I need to consistently make good bread at home for my family.
Thrift Store #4
Milk Glass Lamp
A couple of months ago I helped Aubrey rearrange and style her bedroom. We moved her bedside lamp from her nightstand to her desk so she’s been without a lamp beside her bed for quite a while so I’ve had my eyes peeled for a lamp for her.
I found this milk glass lamp at the last store we visited for the day, and I thought the price was so good at $5.00 that I didn’t even bother to negotiate. I loved it and knew that it would fit her bedroom style perfectly. I’m still on the hunt for a shade for it though so for the time being I’m using a lampshade from a living room lamp.
I did think about painting it but I love really love the milk glass. I may go back and clean up the metal around it though.
Everything Has a Place
I am so happy with everything I purchased on our trip. I’ve already found a place for everything and have been putting it all to use right away. That’s the goal for items in our house, right? So that they serve a purchase and are loved and/or useful
Do you love to thrift?
Do you plan your trip ahead of time and think about what items you’re specifically looking for? Or do mainly window shop and see what you can see?
